UFP Symposium Berlin: Ultrafeine Partikel in der Außenluft und in InnenräumenThis is the third presentation of the UFP Symposium Berlin: Ultrafeine Partikel in der Außenluft und in Innenräumen ("Ultrafine particles in the air and indoors"). It is presented by the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Air Pollution of the TU Berlin and the Federal Environmental Agency.

TSI's Sebastian Schmitt will deliver a presentation at this symposium on ultrafine particles. Co-authored by TSI experts Torsten Tritscher, Carsten Kykal, Thomas Krinke, and Florian Dahlkötter, the paper is titled, "Messung von ultrafeinen Partikeln: Von der Probenahme bis zur Detektion (Measurement of ultrafine particles: from sampling to detection)." See an abstract for this presentation below.

Several TSI experts have also co-authored a poster in collaboration with experts from the University of Viennato be presented at the UFP Symposium. Look for the poster Charakterisierung und Anwendung eines neuen wasserbastierten vielseitig einsetzbarern Kondensationspartikelzählers (Characterization and application of a new water-based versatile condensation particle counter) during poster sessions at the symposium.

TSI experts have developed precision instruments for counting, sizing, and analyzing particles, nanoparticles, and ultrafine particles. We look forward to being part of this symposium and helping attendees reach their research goals.

The accurate measurement of ultrafine aerosol particles (UFP) in the atmosphere has received much interest in recent years. This is not least due to the change in the emission patterns of the aerosol sources to ever smaller particles and the latest findings on the health relevance of UFP. In contrast to the measurement of the particulate mass PMx below a certain particle size x (x = 1, 2.5, 10 μm), methods based on the particle number concentration measurement offer the advantage of being able to temporally resolve short-term events. An important step in the harmonization of atmospheric particle number measurement has been created by the EU wide technical guideline CEN / TS 16976. In addition to the specifications for the condensation particle counter (CPC), sampling and data acquisition were also defined. The sampling system combination (TSI Model 3772200) and CEN-CPC (TSI Model 3750-CEN), for example, meet the criteria.

The detection of the particle number concentration down to a few nm particle diameter by CPC is reliably possible. An important parameter for condensation particle counter is the lower detection limit, which is typically described with the D50 value (50% counting efficiency). This paper presents current measurements of this dependence on the aerosol material in the latest water-based condensation particle counter (V-WCPC 3789, TSI). In addition to the detection of the particle number concentration, the measurement of the particle number size distribution is also important in order to be able to estimate the respirable nature of the aerosol or to infer aerosol sources. A widely used and standardized method is the measurement by means of particle size spectrometers such as the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The application of particle size spectrometers in atmospheric measurements up to 1 nm is shown (see Fig. 1). In addition, the importance of proper sampling should be discussed and appropriate solutions demonstrated.
