V3V™ Captures 3D Vortex Shedding from a Sphere

2008-03-27 - V3V Captures 3D Vortex Shedding from a Sphere

TSI's patented Volumetric 3-Component Velocimetry (V3V™) system was recently used to capture the volumetric flow structure downstream of a smooth sphere in cross flow. Three-dimensional vortex shedding was quantified in one instantaneous capture from the unique 3D camera in a volume 90 x 90 x 140 mm at Reynolds number 2200. Hairpin-like vortices formed downstream of the sphere and were shed alternately along opposite sides of a plane of symmetry.
