Rocket Science Applied to Air Pollution in the Developing World
Recent air pollution research in Jakarta, Indonesia yielded sobering data and proved that people in developing parts of the world are clearly being harmed by the air they breathe. The authors discuss their findings and show how advanced measurement techniques in future research will give these regions the data needed to make informed decisions about the problem and develop effective controls.

    APSSpectrometer in Pharmaceutical Applications
The aerodynamic size distribution of sprays delivered by metered dose inhalers (MDIs) or dry powder inhalers (DPIs) is a key parameter controlling the effectiveness of these devices. That’s why aerodynamic measurements are used during development of inhalation devices and required by regulatory agencies during the evaluation process. The Model 3321 Aerodynamic Particle Sizer ® (APS) spectrometer has been used by researchers to characterize aerosols generated by inhalers and have greatly reduced test times. When used with a Model 3306 Impactor Inlet, the Model 3321 APS spectrometer provides a chemically-specific estimate of the dose that has a high probability of reaching the lungs.

University of Minnesota Mobile Emission Laboratory
Scientists at the University of Minnesota Department of Mechanical Engineering built a very impressive Mobile Emission Laboratory (MEL). It is used as a platform for on-road rat inhalation studies; for evaluating diesel emission control devices, specially blended diesel fuels, and lube oils during real-world tests; and sniffing the plumes of automobiles and diesel trucks during on-road chase experiments.

    Aerosol Monitoring on L.A. Freeways
Los Angeles commuters spend an average of 1½ hours driving to and from work, with much of this time spent on freeways. They share the road with diesel trucks, buses, and a great many other cars. Some enterprising California researchers put together a mobile air-monitoring platform to make particle measurements inside this challenging environment. The mobile laboratory gave the researchers exciting new data about aerosols in and around high-traffic areas.

    FAAM Research Aircraft
The United Kingdom Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurement (FAAM) aircraft is now literally off the ground! Organized by major British universities and research groups, this project will soon be a major provider of atmospheric, environmental, and meteorological data. TSI is pleased to have several of our instruments on board.
