Elemental analysis with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Variations on optical emission spectroscopy or OES have long been the mainstay of elemental analysis. Inductively coupled plasma ICP (ICP-OES) and arc spark OES accurately measure the elemental composition of solid materials, but they have their drawbacks. ICP analysis requires the slow dissolution of solid samples in hazardous acids. ICP is also ineffective on non-conductive, amorphous, or loose materials.

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy or LIBS—a type of atomic emission spectroscopy–can measure the concentration of virtually all elements. With LIBS, a focused pulsed laser vaporizes the materials and creates a plasma for optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The wavelength of light emitted from the plasma is specific to the elemental composition. The intensity of the light emitted correlates to the concentration of the element. LIBS or LIBS-OES uses a single laser pulse to reveal multi-element composition of a micro-volume of material in virtually any matrix.

Elemental analysis tools

Desktop elemental analysis: fast, direct, and less sample prep

ChemReveal LIBS Desktop Analyzer is capable of direct, fast, multi-elemental and chemical analysis of solids with minimal to no sample preparation. Unlike ICP, LIBS does not require laborious digestion; it analyzes solids directly. When used as a pre-screening tool for ultra-trace ICP, LIBS results can help determine which digestion protocols to apply and whether ultra-trace elemental analysis is required in some cases. Designed to provide a routine, reproducible means of calibration and high quality assurance, the ChemReveal LIBS Desktop Analyzer takes LIBS-OES instrumentation to the next level, making it a powerful alternative to traditional elemental analysis techniques.

Handheld elemental analysis with ChemLite®

The ChemLite™ Plus Metals Analyzer 4240 is a high-performance tool for rugged use in the field. The ChemLite uses LIBS technology to identify aluminum, magnesium, titanium, iron, copper, nickel alloys in as little as 1 second. With no radiation and a Class 1M eye-safe laser, the ChemLite is regulation-free. Unlike XRF guns, there are no licensing or OSHA worries with ChemLite. Your ChemLite metals gun arrives calibrated for metal analysis and ready to operate.

Our customers around the world use ChemLite in geology, archaeology, mining, gemology, and more. Customize the tool for your material or application by simply downloading an individual LIBS spectrum. Portable, easy-to-use, accurate and affordable, LIBS analysis can be in your hands—with ChemLite.
