Depending on the application, the standards prescribe testing with different aerosols and different particle size ranges. For example, HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) filters that are used in room or building ventilation to provide acceptable indoor air quality typically have a large surface area and low pressure drop. Filters for pressurized air and tested to VDI 3926-2 have very different characteristics.

Meeting your standards

Standards are updated and new standards are created for filter testing, such as ISO 16890. This standard aims to harmonize the testing of HVAC filters, previously done to EN 779 and ASHRAE 52.2.

TSI manufactures instruments that are used to generate aerosol and measure the flow rate and the filter efficiency or penetration. In order to provide a cost-effective way to combine these components while for example source sheet metal and duct segments locally, it developed the model 3150 Component Filter Test System (CFTS).

The CFTS is an instrument platform that connects to all components needed for a filter tests system such as aerosol generators, conditioning, valves, detectors, and pumps with the TSI instruments already pre-configured. It collects the sensor information, controls the flow, and communicates with the measurement instruments. Through its graphical user interface the user can define test layouts and procedures as well as run the tests.
